Things can turn bad very quickly when severe weather hits during a patient transport. Although these passengers are on a non-emergency transport (NEMT) vehicle and are typically in better shape than those in an ambulance, they do tend to have precarious health situations that you need to keep in mind when putting together a hurricane or severe weather response plan. The goal is to keep everyone as safe as possible, from your employees to your clients.
So, how do you protect everyone’s safety? Here are a few things that should be at the top of your response plan.
Be Prepared to Keep Operating
The rest of the area may be shut down due to a lack of power or other resources, but your NEMT company is like those of ambulance squads and other first responders: you need to stay open, just in case your services are needed.
Your plan should include a list of people who have to stay on call or in your station in case of severe weather. Having things like backup generators and special mobile phones can keep the lines of communication open when things get bad outside.
Monitor Routes
Your company probably already monitors its drivers via GPS. In case you aren’t, this is a good time to start. Being able to keep an eye on them when a storm is on the way or currently in session is the best way to keep them safe. You can advise them of non-flooded route and you can keep your patient’s loved ones updated on their location and status.
Set Up a Triage System
Since it’s all hands-on deck during a hurricane, your business will more than likely be called on to transport sick and injured people. By helping those who are the worst off first, you’ll be able to get everyone to safety.
Make Sure Your Insurance is in Place
Last but far from least, before the storm hits, check your insurance policies. You need to make sure that all of your vehicles have appropriate coverage, as well as check your policy limits to avoid getting caught paying for storm damage repairs and other things out of pocket. In addition to your vehicles and drivers, you should also have business insurance on your building and a general liability plan in place.
